I often am able to provide a fixed quote for "defined" jobs such as consumer unit replacements and specific alterations where my survey has provided me with all the information I need.
A lot of the works I do are remedial works in more elderly properties, and because of the potential faults , a fixed quote even for relatively simple work is sometimes not possible.
The types of faults I can typically find in old houses are very varied: For example, poor original workmanship resulting in exposed or vulnerable joints, open circuit cables, high resistance junctions, sockets or switches, inaccessible & faulty junction boxes, inadequate bonding, dangerous lack of earthing, incorrect cable rating, water damage to cables, rodent damage. Old DIY wiring alterations can be a particular fruitful source of imaginative bodges.
